Grace Paley
1922–2007

“Everyone, real or invented, deserves the open destiny of life.”

This issue of Alaska Quarterly Review is dedicated to the memory of Grace Paley, a masterful writer of stories, essays, and poems whose courageous life and works embody the quest for truth and justice in the world.

A long-time contributing editor of Alaska Quarterly Review, Grace was a good friend and mentor to us. “Against Despair: An Interview with Grace Paley” and a mini-anthology of her work appeared in Volume 7, Number 3 & 4 (Spring and Summer 1989). Her essay, “Six Days: Some Rememberings,” appeared in Volume 13, Number 1 & 2 (Fall and Winter 1994) and was subsequently selected for The Best American Essays and The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses. More recently, three of her poems appeared in Volume 22, Number 3 & 4 (Fall and Winter 2005).
