Surrounded by the Talkeetna Mountains, a robust patch of fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) is pictured under blue skies. This common herb thrives in areas of disturbed ground such as burned forests, avalanche areas, and, in this case, a roadside. Fireweed is said to have medicinal properties and nutritional value as a survival food because of its high concentration of vitamin C and beta-carotene.
